"One of Us" Program for Seniors In Need

Give the gift of holiday cheer and companionship to a senior in need!

12 days of Christmas, 12 days of kindness can go a long way

This wonderful time of year can be a trying time for many vulnerable seniors in our community who have no family and experience physical, emotional and financial challenges.

Many seniors descend into isolation. For some it happens after a loss of a spouse and/or other family members and friends, for others it is due to a disease or chronic illnesses which constrain their mobility and/or impair their cognition; and for some it is all of that and even more. Many seniors are also faced with serious financial challenges, which become even worse as their health deteriorates and they become frail.

“As an organization dedicated to the care and services for seniors, we know that the number of vulnerable seniors is growing and that the need for more services is bigger than ever. Our new “ One of Us “  program for seniors in need aims to reach out to lonely and/or financially isolated seniors, bringing more joy and support to their lives,“ Irena Dounets, Executive Director.

A small act of kindness, a gesture of care, love and companionship can go a long way. Seniors should not be forgotten, not during Christmas, not during any holiday, not throughout the year. We want seniors to keep their smiles on and to continue to be part of our community.

“It’s Christmas, a small gift shows seniors that they are loved and appreciated, that someone has thought of them  and that their lives matter. It is heartwarming to see how much joy a personalized Christmas gift and a personal visit can bring in the lives of seniors who have no families”, Nika Goutor, Coordinator of the One of Us Christmas initiative.

“I will now have a picture like everybody else, a family picture.” Markiana, Care Centre’s resident.

“When Santa said I will come to see you again next year, this sounded like a promise for friendship. Can he visit me more often? I would be so happy.” Michael, Care Centre’s resident.

12 days of Christmas, 12 days of kindness can go a long way.  Help a Senior in Need this Christmas Season!

Your support today will help us reach out to more seniors in need this season and throughout the year, providing much needed direct assistance and companionship.

Help a Senior in Need Today!

Through the “One of Us” program financially disadvantaged and isolated seniors will be able to receive basic necessities that family normally provides and will be assisted with outings to seniors’ favourite places in town. Seniors will also be connected with Care Centre’s trained volunteers, who will offer them meaningful companionship and facilitate their access to social and recreational activities, including the Care Centre’s social program for seniors from the community.

The Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre extends its deep gratitude to Svitlana, Natalia and Nestor Nalywayko for their kindness and generosity in making it possible for the Care Centre to start the One of Us program for seniors in need.
