"One of Us" Program for Seniors In Need

The Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre and St. Demetrius Apartments have committed to expand its support to vulnerable seniors.

As an organization dedicated to senior care, we are concerned that an increasing number of elderly seniors are isolated and experience physical, emotional and financial challenges.

Our new “One of Us“  project for seniors in need aims to reach out to seniors who are lonely and/or financially challenged to provide them with much needed companionship and support.

Through this project we connect isolated seniors to volunteers who maintain regular contact with them through friendly calls and friendly visits, while also helping them engage in various recreational activities and social events, held at the Care Centre. In addition, seniors who are also financially disadvantaged receive basic necessities that family normally provides.

This project was initiated by Svitlana Nalywayko, a Board Member and a past family member of the Ukrainian Canadian Care Centre.

“As many seniors approach their final years, some are fortunate enough to be surrounded by a loving family. Tragically, a growing number of seniors have become elderly orphans - completely alone and isolated. Our parents, Ivan and Meedy Nalywayko, were surrounded by their children, grandchildren and friends. While they were residents at the Care centre, we were all together during regular visits and special occasions - birthday parties, Ukrainian Christmas dinners and Easter.

But we came to know that not everyone is that fortunate and there are many seniors who have no one and are alone. So we proposed a friends and family fund, called One of Us, to provide direct assistance to these special needs seniors.” Svitlana Nalywayko, Board Member and past family member.

At this time, with the spread of COVID-19, your donation to One of Us project will help us help seniors stay connected, safe and secure during these trying times.

Project updates

I-pads were purchased to be used for live video chat between residents and their families or friends.

With funds raised in November and December 2019, the Care Centre was able to provide companionship and support to over 43 seniors in need.

“It’s Christmas, a small gift shows seniors that they are loved and appreciated, that someone has thought of them  and that their lives matter. It is heartwarming to see how much joy a personalized Christmas gift and a personal visit can bring in the lives of seniors who have no families”, Nika Goutor, Coordinator of the One of Us Christmas initiative.

“I will now have a picture like everybody else, a family picture.” Markiana, Care Centre’s resident.

“When Santa said I will come to see you again next year, this sounded like a promise for friendship. Can he visit me more often? I would be so happy.” Michael, Care Centre’s resident.
